Pricing wall beds in Crofton
There is no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How big the furniture is
- How square the room is
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.
Wall beds in Crofton
A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and comes down when it is time to sleep. It lets one room do two jobs, such as a spare room that’s also a study. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and paint it in a colour you choose. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a guest room that sits empty most of the time and storage built around a fold-down bed.
A good part of the housing around Crofton is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Wall beds for homes in Crofton
About 57% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Crofton went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 31% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Crofton. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. More than half of the homes in the area around Crofton (about 57%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war bedrooms are typically simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall.
If you live in a period home close to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to Jubilee Country Park? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. For a flat near Orpington station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What wall beds cannot fix
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Building work to make a wall sound
- Choosing a mattress for you
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Hand-painted finish
- Shelves or a desk alongside
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You get in touch with some details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
- We visit, measure and go through the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
- A written quote is sent to you.
- Everything is built in our workshop.
- The wall bed is fitted in your home.
How to prepare
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Tell us about parking near your home

Related advice
Your questions about wall beds in Crofton
Do you make wall beds for homes in Crofton?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Crofton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
I live near Orpington station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?
It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.
