Wall beds for homes in Petts Wood

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, and that shapes the design. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. If your home has storage built around a fold-down bed and a hobby room with a bed for guests, that is what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Petts Wood, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. That is where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made wall bed units are available and typically cost less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They come in set sizes and finishes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Your questions about wall beds in Petts Wood

Does a conservation area in or near Petts Wood affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Petts Wood in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, we work across Bromley, Petts Wood included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.

How are wall beds priced?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

That is something we look at when we measure. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

We design the housing around the mechanism and the mattress it takes.

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.
