Wall beds for your home in Denmark Hill

About our wall beds in Denmark Hill

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and is lowered again at night. It lets one room do two jobs, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We make the cabinet for your room and finish it to match. People typically come to us about a hobby room with a bed for guests and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With most households around Denmark Hill in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern blocks are both possible. In a mansion block, bedrooms often keep their chimney breasts and tall ceilings, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls. The fixings are chosen for whichever wall you have.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Advice

Fitted bedroom furniture in Denmark Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Denmark Hill were built before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 11 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Denmark Hill. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in Denmark Hill is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Giles, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Brunswick Park? Wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If your home is one of the older houses near St Matthew's Camberwell, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Denmark Hill is part of the London Borough of Southwark, about 1 mile south-east of East Dulwich. We can visit homes in Denmark Hill on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Denmark Hill is one of the places in Southwark where we make wall beds.

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Let us know what the wall is made of if you know
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

What affects the price in Denmark Hill

Several things affect the price:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The internal fittings

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

What wall beds cannot fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Wiring for lights or chargers

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Denmark Hill station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Denmark Hill?

Yes. Denmark Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, so we check it at the design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.
