Wall beds for homes in St George's Fields
We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. Typical reasons to get in touch are a studio that works by day and night and room for a desk and a guest bed, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Many homes around St George's Fields were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are compact flats in newer blocks. Small rooms suit fitted furniture that uses the full height and the tricky corners. Boxing for pipes and risers is designed around rather than left as dead space.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it is useful to sort them out in advance. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

FAQs: wall beds in St George's Fields
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St George's Fields?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Do you cover homes near Elephant & Castle station?
Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Do I choose the paint colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
Are fold-down beds safe to use?
Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
When is bespoke worth it?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Tips worth knowing
Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Lower and lift the bed steadily
- Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
- Tell us what the wall is made of if you know
- Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.
Tell us what the wall is made of if you know. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we look at it when we measure.
Flats, leases and landlords
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.
St George's Fields homes and wall beds
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around St George's Fields were built since 2000 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 164 entries within half a mile of the centre of St George's Fields. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. For fitting in St George's Fields, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Near listed buildings like Old Vic Theatre, under half a mile north-west of the centre of St George's Fields, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For an older house near Former Church of St Jude, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your children go to St George's Cathedral Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
