What it costs
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The number of doors and drawers
- How square the room is
- How big the furniture is
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
Helping us understand the room
To help us picture the room, please include:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What the furniture needs to hold
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, use our contact form.
How we make wall beds for Herne Hill
Our wall beds are made for homes in Herne Hill and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure the room and check the wall, followed by a quote. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you will know beforehand. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a real mattress for visitors and a playroom that can sleep visitors.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Herne Hill date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Herne Hill
Homes built before 1919 make up about 59% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Herne Hill, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. The centre of Herne Hill is within about a quarter of a mile of the Sunray Estate Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 22% of households in the streets around Herne Hill, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Kingswood House, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to Belair Park? Wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

Advice
How it is made
Shelves
Open shelves soften a wall of cupboards and keep it from feeling heavy.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting gives a traditional finish in a period room.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
FAQs: wall beds in Herne Hill
My home in Herne Hill is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Which boards do you build with?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Can a wall bed go on any wall?
We check that during the design visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.
