Wall beds for homes in Elephant and Castle

The cabinet is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. Typical reasons to get in touch are hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around Elephant and Castle have been built since 2000, and in newer homes, bedrooms tend to be compact, with plasterboard stud walls. Wall beds are fixed into the studs or held by fixings made for the board. Where a small built-in cupboard came with the home, it can be reworked as part of the design.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Common questions about wall beds

Does a conservation area in or near Elephant and Castle affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Elephant and Castle?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes, that is a common request. A desk beside the bed suits a room that is an office by day, while new sockets are for your electrician.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.

Why people ask for wall beds in Elephant and Castle

Some want a room that can change as the family does. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors without giving up the floor.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use

If you live in a period home close to Metropolitan Tabernacle, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

How to choose a carpenter in London

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What wall beds can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Electrical work for reading lights
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

Wall beds in Elephant and Castle: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 39% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Elephant and Castle, with about 20% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 149 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Elephant and Castle. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.

If your children go to London College of Communication or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Close to Newington Gardens? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Sofa beds cost less and need no fixing, and for occasional guests that may be enough. With a wall bed you get a proper bed and an empty floor by day, which matters in a small room. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It still uses the full height.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why us?

  • Work across the whole of London
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it’s useful to let us know at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site.

How to prepare
