Wall beds in Southwark

We fit wall beds in Southwark and across London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, followed by a quote. The cabinets are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you are living with more floor space in a studio flat and a spare room that’s rarely slept in, wall beds made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Around Southwark, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms tend to be on the small side. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Shelves

A few open shelves beside the bed break up a run of doors.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits parts that carry load. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

How fitting works for wall beds

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. First, you tell us about the space.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Questions from Southwark

Do you cover homes near Elephant & Castle station?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Southwark?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall, so the whole wall is useful. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

What happens at the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction

Follow the mechanism maker’s guidance each time you lower and lift the bed. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, and do not let children play with it.

If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. The fixing depends on the wall, and we look at it when we measure.

What affects the price in Southwark

The price for your room depends on:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

For a quote for wall beds in Southwark, drop us a line using the contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, with sizes if you have them. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

Why people ask for wall beds in Southwark

Working from home has changed how many spare rooms are used. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a fold-down bed lets it do both.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A living room with a bed that folds away

Near listed buildings like The George Inn, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Southwark, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Bedroom storage in Southwark

Homes built since 2000 make up about 46% of the housing in the streets around Southwark, with about 17% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Southwark, 37 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Newer homes are more common around Southwark than across the rest of London: about 46% date from 2000 onwards, against about 28%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.

If you live in a period home close to Borough Welsh Congregational Chapel, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If your children go to Charles Dickens Primary School or a school nearby, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
