What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Donnybrook Quarter

The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It is useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted space beside the chimney breast and clothes with nowhere proper to go.

Many newer homes have tall windows or full-height glazing in the bedroom, which leaves fewer walls for storage. Many homes around Donnybrook Quarter were built since 2000, and fitted furniture can use every part of the solid walls. Corner sections are planned so nothing is wasted.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Donnybrook Quarter

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Donnybrook Quarter?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

I live in a flat in Donnybrook Quarter. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first before we come to fit them.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted or hand painted. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop. Large standalone pieces don’t always fit the lift or the hallway, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. It is then assembled and fixed in the room.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Donnybrook Quarter

  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote

Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf and how to compare quotes.

What it costs

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking near your home
  • The number of doors and drawers

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What it’s made from

Hanging rails

Long rails need support so they don’t bend under heavy coats. We plan the rail lengths with that in mind.

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood, so they hold their shape.
