Built-in bookshelves in Donnybrook Quarter: what you get
Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. People usually come to us about shelves packed two rows deep and bookcases that lean or wobble, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A large number of homes around Donnybrook Quarter date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer blocks. In a compact new-build room, a shallower run of built-in bookshelves can add storage without crowding the space. Boxing for pipes and risers is common in newer homes, and the furniture can be designed around it.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve
For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels.
Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
- Storage for children’s books and games
- Shelves that sag under books
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.3 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. All of London, Tower Hamlets included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Donnybrook Quarter. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
For an older house near St Paul Old Ford, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If your children go to Old Ford Primary - A Paradigm Academy or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Caring for painted furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Ask your electrician about sockets early
- Let us know if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
- Let us know about access early
- Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
Leave a little air behind books on an external wall, to help avoid condensation. Watch for any musty smell or marks.
Keep heavy things on low shelves.
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Questions from Donnybrook Quarter
Is Donnybrook Quarter in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. Donnybrook Quarter is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in Donnybrook Quarter?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Built-in bookshelves are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.
How long will the fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.
From workshop to your room
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.
