Wall beds in Harringay

Why bespoke in Harringay?

If you may move soon, a standalone bed you can take with you could suit you better. It’s worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before choosing built-in. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Why us?

  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote

About our wall beds in Harringay

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. We check the wall and floor at the design visit, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. People typically come to us about room for a desk and a guest bed and storage built around a fold-down bed; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Harringay built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Questions we’re often asked

My house in Harringay is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Harringay?

Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London, and Harringay is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

That is something we look at when we measure. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Think about where extra bedding will go
  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. The mechanism should only be adjusted as its maker allows.

Tell us what the wall is made of if you know. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the measuring visit too.

What affects the cost of wall beds

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The internal fittings
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking and unloading on your street

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
