Fitted home offices in Harringay
About our fitted home offices in Harringay
Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, it has to leave room to walk by. At the design visit in Harringay, we’ll see what fits. If your home has a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room and work things on show in the evening, that’s what home offices are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Around Harringay, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms typically have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. An alcove is often just wide enough for a desk, with shelves above. Walls are rarely straight in older houses, so the desk and shelves are scribed to fit.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

What affects the price in Harringay
There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How big the furniture is
- How square the room is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit.
What to send when you get in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Questions we’re often asked
I live in a flat in Harringay. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Home offices are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Harringay?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What are your built-in desks made from?
The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Fitted home offices in Harringay: local notes
About 75% of the homes in the streets around Harringay went up before 1919, and about 8% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Harringay include The Salisbury Public House (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox) (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Haringey included. Vans bringing furniture to Harringay fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
Bruce Castle, about 1.6 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If your children go to South Harringay Infant School or a school nearby, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. Close to Chestnuts Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Practical tips
These points come up often when people plan fitted home offices. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Think about what you’d like on show
- Note what sits on and around your desk
- Think about what will sit on the shelves
- Mention any parking rules on your street
Heavy files are best kept low or close to the supports. It helps shelves stay straight. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.
Use a mat or coasters on the desk for hot drinks. Mop up spills quickly. A desk mat under the keyboard and mouse saves wear on the surface.
Flats, leases and landlords
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
From workshop to your room
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You get in touch and tell us about the work you do and the equipment you use.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- You receive a quote in writing for the office.
- The office furniture is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
- The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.
