Built-in bookshelves for your home in Harringay
Built-in bookshelves in Harringay: what you get
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. For a home in Harringay, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. If your home has storage for children’s books and games and bookshelves in keeping with an older house, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and they set the lines that built-in bookshelves have to meet. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Harringay, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the measuring visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
Is bespoke worth it?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, to suit the room. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What it costs
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How big the furniture is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Parking near your home
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Before the design visit
These details help when you contact us:
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Living-room storage in Harringay
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Harringay were built before 1919 (about 75%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 8%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Harringay. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 34% of households in the area around Harringay, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Salisbury Public House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Harringay, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Close to Chestnuts Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.
Birch plywood
How much a shelf bends depends on its span and what it carries. Birch plywood is stiff, which helps long shelves stay flat.
From workshop to your room
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
I live near Harringay Green Lanes station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Harringay?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not typically. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.
