Wall beds in Tooting

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, so the bed doesn’t dominate the working day. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, though any new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a studio that works by day and night and storage built around a fold-down bed.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Tooting are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the softer look of a hand-painted finish in a period room.

Shelves

Shelves can go above or beside the bed cabinet to make use of the whole wall.

Bedrooms in Tooting: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Tooting were built before 1919 (about 64%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 20 entries within half a mile of the centre of Tooting. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 31% of households in the area around Tooting live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021. London terraces usually have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, which suit fitted furniture.

For a flat near Tooting station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Wandle Park, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your children go to St Boniface RC Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Check how the cabinet will get into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so it is useful to know about tight turns.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Where other trades come in

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Advice

Your questions about wall beds in Tooting

I live near Tooting station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

I live in a flat in Tooting. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Will you provide a mattress for the bed?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We’ll explain its limits during the design visit, so you can choose with confidence.
