Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Old Town?

Yes. Old Town is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details.

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Old Town?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls, while leaving space to stand and turn. We will measure and plan it at the design visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

Either works. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. Many people choose a mix.

About our walk-in wardrobes in Old Town

A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, either open to the room or behind doors. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that is for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. People normally come to us about turning a box room into a dressing room and more space for clothes and shoes; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Hinged doors need space to open, which a compact bedroom may not have, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Many homes around Old Town were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Materials and finishes

Hanging rails

Double hanging puts one rail above another make good use of the height.

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek finish, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Bedroom storage in Old Town

About 42% of the homes in the area around Old Town went up since 2000, and about 31% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Old Town include Parish Church of St John the Baptist (Grade I), under half a mile south-west, and Old Palace Croydon: Chapel (Grade I), under half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Croydon sets its own rules. Depending on your street in Old Town, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Close to Duppas Hill? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. If your children go to The Minster Nursery and Infant School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 3 miles east. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.
