Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits parts that carry load. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Bed mechanism housing
We build the housing to suit the mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. When the bed is up, the front looks like cupboard doors.
How we make wall beds for Wandsworth
The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that is sound enough to hold it. We check the wall and floor at the measuring visit, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. Typical reasons to get in touch are a guest room that sits empty most of the time and a home office that also sleeps guests; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Wandsworth built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Common questions about wall beds
My house in Wandsworth is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Wandsworth?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It is made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How much does a wall bed cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, Wandsworth included.
Why people ask for wall beds in Wandsworth
Some people are tired of sofa beds. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.
Requests we hear often include:
- A bed that fills a little-used room
- A home office that also sleeps guests
- A playroom that can sleep visitors
- A studio that works by day and night
Near listed buildings like Church of St Anne, under half a mile east of the centre of Wandsworth, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How parking will work on your street
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. About 49% of homes in the area around Wandsworth were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Older houses can have lath-and-plaster internal walls and floors that slope, both of which matter when fixing a wall bed.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Anne's Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Fulham Palace, about 1.5 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Leaseholders: check your lease first
- Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
- Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
- Decide who the bed is mainly for
The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth.
Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.
What we do not do
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Plastering or decorating the room
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
- Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Shelves or a desk alongside
From workshop to your room
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You let us know about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts. We show you how the bed works before we leave.
Preparing the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
