About our wall beds in Roehampton

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. Typical reasons to get in touch are a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a guest bed that disappears in the day; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Roehampton, where many homes date from the post-war decades, the bedroom may be modest in size but regular in shape. Where there is not much space in front, a careful layout helps everything fit. Concrete and blockwork walls need fixings chosen for them.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know beforehand helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. First, you let us know about the space. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the bed, shelves and desk.
  3. You receive a written quote, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

How to get a quote

Questions from Roehampton

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barnes station?

Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Roehampton?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Are fold-down beds safe to use?

A secure fixing and careful use are what matter. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls

Follow the mechanism maker’s guidance each time you lower and lift the bed. Make sure the floor in front is clear before the bed comes down, and don’t let children play with it.

Leasehold flats can have rules on alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

What we do not do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Building work to make a wall sound

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Roehampton

About 46% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Roehampton went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 18% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 28 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Roehampton. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Roehampton is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live in a period home close to St Margaret's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. Near listed buildings like Roehampton House (at Queen Mary's Hospital), under half a mile south-west of the centre of Roehampton, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

The problems wall beds solve

Working from home has changed how many spare rooms are used. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a fold-down bed lets it do both.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A spare room that is rarely slept in
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep

For families living near Granard Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
