How we make wall beds for Putney

We fit wall beds in Putney and across London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, then a quote in writing. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know beforehand. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a storage wall with a bed inside.

A bedroom in a 1950s or 1960s home is usually a simple rectangle, with the window on one wall and the door near a corner. Many homes around Putney date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, which often means a whole wall of fitted furniture with few tricky cuts. We plan the space in front first, so everything opens fully.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Wall beds in Putney: local notes

About 32% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Putney went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 28% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Putney, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Church of All Saints (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Purpose-built flats are home to about 56% of households in the area around Putney, according to Census 2021. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your home is one of the older houses near Polish Church of St John the Evangelist, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Close to Bishops Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If your children go to Our Lady of Victories Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

FAQs: wall beds in Putney

Is parking a problem for fitting in Putney?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Putney?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

When you need someone else

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Choosing a mattress for you
  • Plastering or decorating the room
  • Wiring for lights or chargers

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan wall beds. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Tell us what the wall is made of if you know
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.

Tell us what the wall is made of if you know. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the measuring visit too.

How fitting works for wall beds

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a post-war house, the hall and stairs are usually straight and simple, which helps when the sections come in. Even so, the route is measured at the design visit. On the day, sections are joined, levelled and fixed.

  1. You let us know about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Why bespoke in Putney?

Ready-made wall bed units are available and normally cost less, and they can work in a simple space. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Big ready-made pieces can be tricky to carry up communal stairs, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections sized for the way in. It is then assembled in the room.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What you get with us

  • Work across the whole of London
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us

Pricing wall beds in Putney

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What to send when you contact us

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • How you want to use the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
