Wall Beds in Streatham Park

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on wall beds in Streatham Park starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • More floor space in a studio flat

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

How we make wall beds for Streatham Park

A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you do not need it and is lowered again at night. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, like a spare room that’s also a study. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and finish it to match. If your home has a living room with a bed that folds away and a real mattress for visitors, wall beds made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

A large share of the homes around Streatham Park were built before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How we price wall beds

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, use our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Practical tips

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.

If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the design visit too.

Do you need wall beds in Streatham Park?

Some want a room that can change as the family does. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests without giving up the floor.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • A real mattress for visitors
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed

Near listed buildings like Roman Catholic Church of the English Martyrs, under half a mile east of the centre of Streatham Park, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Wall beds for homes in Streatham Park

About 63% of the homes in the streets around Streatham Park went up before 1919, and about 12% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Streatham Park is partly covered by the Streatham Park Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Streatham Park is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If you live near Streatham Common, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. For a flat near Streatham station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

FAQs: wall beds in Streatham Park

How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Streatham Park?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Wall beds are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Streatham station?

Yes, homes across Wandsworth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
