Wall beds in Wennington: what you get

A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, so the bed does not dominate the working day. We can allow for cables to the desk, though any new sockets are for your electrician. Most enquiries start with a real mattress for visitors and shelves or a desk around the bed, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Wennington, bedrooms are often simple shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Bedroom storage in Wennington

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 47% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Wennington, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Wennington, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary and St Peter (Grade II*), under half a mile west, and Lennard Arms Inn (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 40% of households in the streets around Wennington live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

The wider area includes historic houses like Rainham Hall, about 1.5 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For an older house near St Mary and St Peter's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to Wildspace Conservation Park? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Think about where extra bedding will go
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

Leasehold flats can have rules on alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Is bespoke worth it?

If you may move soon, a standalone bed you can take with you could suit you better. How long you will be in the home is worth weighing up before you decide. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Rainham (Essex) station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Wennington?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage, ready to check.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
