About our wall beds in Romford

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. If you are living with a hobby room with a bed for guests and a bed that fills a little-used room, that’s what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Romford, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Romford homes and wall beds

In the neighbourhood around Romford, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and the years since 2000 (about 30%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List records 10 entries within half a mile of the centre of Romford. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Romford is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

The wider area includes historic houses like Hare Hall, about 1.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If you live near Lodge Farm Park, wall beds are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. Living in a block of flats near Romford station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Romford is part of the London Borough of Havering. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Romford included. We cover places right across Havering, large and small.

  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it is worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You let us know about the room and who the bed is for.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage, ready to check.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are built in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Common questions about wall beds

Do you make wall beds for homes in Romford?

Yes, Romford is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Romford station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What does a wall bed cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes, that is a common request. A desk beside the bed suits a room that’s an office by day, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Think about where extra bedding will go
  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Think about the route into the room. Furniture made in a workshop comes in sections sized for stairs, landings and lifts, so tell us about narrow stairs or a small lift.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Is bespoke worth it?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and in a simple room they may be enough. They’re made in standard sizes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.
