About our wall beds in Collier Row

A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you don’t need it and comes down when it’s time to sleep. It lets one room do two jobs, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We make the cabinet for your room and finish it to match. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a guest bed that disappears in the day and a flexible room for a growing family.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Collier Row, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. Small rooms like that suit wall beds, whether the room is a guest room, a dressing room or a study. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Your questions about wall beds in Collier Row

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Collier Row?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live near Romford station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes, that’s a common request. A desk beside the bed suits a room that is an office by day, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

Shelves

A few open shelves beside the bed break up a run of doors.

Birch plywood gives a strong carcass around a moving bed.

What prompts wall beds in Collier Row

Plenty of spare rooms have become home offices. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a wall bed makes that possible.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A flexible room for a growing family

If you live near Raphael Park, wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Bedrooms in Collier Row: local notes

In the streets around Collier Row, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Collier Row include Numbers 215 (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Collier Row. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If your children go to Rise Park Infant School or a school nearby, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live in a flat close to Romford station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How fitting works for wall beds

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
