FAQs: wall beds in Upminster Bridge

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upminster Bridge?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Upminster Bridge?

Yes. Upminster Bridge is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Havering and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Is a wall bed safe?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.

Wall beds for homes in Upminster Bridge

Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a living room with a bed that folds away and a flexible room for a growing family.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars usually has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Upminster Bridge, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for wall beds

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. We start with what the room is for, day and night.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and talk through the design. We also check there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Don’t try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. The bed needs room to fold down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Supplying mattresses
  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Advice on your lease

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels for a clean, even look.

Bed mechanism housing

The mechanism sets the size of the housing and the bed size you choose.
