Wall beds for homes in Hornchurch

In the streets around Hornchurch, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 65%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. There are 13 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hornchurch. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Havering is no exception. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

For a flat near Emerson Park station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Langtons Infant School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. The wider area includes historic houses like Hare Hall, about 1.8 miles north. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Hornchurch is about 2 miles north-west of Romford, within the London Borough of Havering. Design visits and fitting in Hornchurch can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Across Havering, we cover Hornchurch and the places around it.

About our wall beds in Hornchurch

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, while new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a guest room that sits empty most of the time.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. Around Hornchurch, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How it is made

Shelves

We can add shelving around the bed for books, boxes or display.

Bed mechanism housing

The housing has to be strong and square, so it is built from sturdy board. It is fixed to a sound wall or floor.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Emerson Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Hornchurch?

Yes. Hornchurch is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Havering and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mattress needs to suit the mechanism, including its size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.

Why bespoke in Hornchurch?

Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height and fill the rest of the wall with storage. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, though we still measure the route in not just the room. Wall beds arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. We start with what the room is for, day and night. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

Check how the cabinet will get into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so it is useful to know about tight turns.
