Is bespoke worth it?

We scribe each seat to follow the walls and floor, so it fits neatly at the walls and floor. A bench simply sits in front of the window. The difference is most noticeable in a period room. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often does not get them. Built-in pieces are designed with the right fixings from the start.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit.

About our window seats in Barking Riverside

Bay windows are common in period homes, and they make a natural place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that aren’t quite straight. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It is the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. Typical reasons to get in touch are a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and a nursery or bedroom short of storage, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Around Barking Riverside, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Questions from Barking Riverside

Is parking a problem for fitting in Barking Riverside?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Barking Riverside station?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How long does it take to fit a window seat?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the seat in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What prompts window seats in Barking Riverside

The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. A bay can be an tricky space for furniture, and a seat makes it part of the room. It gives you a place to sit in the light.

Requests we hear often include:

  • No space for toys and games
  • An empty bay that doesn’t get used
  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator

For families living near George Carey Church of England Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the quote be in writing?

What affects the cost of window seats

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How square the room is
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The width and height of the space

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

What we need to know

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, use our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Corners and door frames are covered as well. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the window.
  2. We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and discuss the design.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
