Castle Green Window Seats

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make window seats for homes in Castle Green, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • Needing more storage in the room

How we make window seats for Castle Green

Some window seats are built in with shelves or cupboards around them. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. We design the seat and the surrounding units together, so the whole wall looks considered. We can go through the options when we visit in Castle Green. Most enquiries start with no comfortable place to sit in the light and a nursery or bedroom short of storage; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Castle Green is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What we don’t do

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Making the seat cushion, which is not our work
  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Radiator grilles

Your questions about window seats in Castle Green

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Castle Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Do you make window seats for homes in Castle Green?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Castle Green is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How long does it take to fit a window seat?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the seat in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

How is a window seat priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the window, the storage and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site once the seat is in. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That helps on a well-used seat.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It is used for the fronts, side panels and radiator grilles. The moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice next to a window.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the window.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Starting with a design visit

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Consider adding shelving around the seat
  • Make room so the whole bay can be measured
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

If you are having a cushion made, we will give you the exact size of the seat. Let the paint cure before the cushion goes on, to protect both the fabric and the finish.

Open and close lids with care, rather than letting them drop. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly.
