Window seats in Crook Log, Bexley
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on window seats in Crook Log starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
- An empty bay that does not get used
- A recess under the window doing nothing
Window seats for your home in Crook Log
Window seats in Crook Log: local notes
In the streets around Crook Log, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Crook Log, Historic England’s list includes Red House (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east, and Danson Park Mansion (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Bexley is no exception. Where a street in Crook Log is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking during the design visit.
If your children go to Crook Log Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For a flat near Bexleyheath station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

About our window seats in Crook Log
The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers are easier to reach if there is a cushion on top. We’ll talk through which suits the way you use the room. If you are living with a child’s room that needs storage and seating and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Crook Log, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

What prompts window seats in Crook Log
Storage is another big reason. Under the seat there’s room for blankets, toys, books and more. It adds storage in a space you’re not otherwise using.
Here’s what window seats can help with:
- A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
- A nursery or bedroom short of storage
- A bay with no furniture that fits
- Looking for a reading spot by the window
Close to Danson Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It’s used for the fronts, side panels and radiator grilles. The moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice next to a window.
Pull-out drawers
A seat can have drawers along its whole length, or drawers with a lid section. Around a radiator, the drawers are placed to leave room for the heat. The design visit settles the mix.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
Questions from Crook Log
Is Crook Log in the area you cover for window seats?
Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London, and Crook Log is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Crook Log?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
How long does it take to fit a window seat?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.
What materials do you use for window seats?
Our window seats are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. A moisture-resistant grade suits a spot by a window, where condensation can form. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
When you need someone else
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Any change to radiator pipes, which needs a plumber
- Plastering and decorating around the seat
- New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- First you let us know about the bay or window where you’d like a seat, including any radiator under it.
- At the design visit we measure the bay or recess and check the radiator, cill and any shutters. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The seat is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
- The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well.
Before fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Getting a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
