Window seats for homes in Farnborough
A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. Drawers or a lift-up lid turn it into storage as well as seating. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. Whatever the room, the process for a home in Farnborough is the same. If your home has wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and no space for toys and games, that’s what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Farnborough, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the window seat we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

How fitting works for window seats
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch about a window seat.
- At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
- The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
- The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
- Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.
How to prepare
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Tell us about parking near your home
Starting with a design visit

Storage in Farnborough homes: local notes
Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 31% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Farnborough, with about 27% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. There are 11 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Farnborough. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 59% of households in the neighbourhood around Farnborough, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Giles the Abbot, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. Close to South Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. Living in a block of flats near Orpington station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Tips worth knowing
People planning window seats often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:
- Check whether there is a radiator under the window
- Consider adding shelving around the seat
- Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
- Choose a colour that suits the room
If you’re having a cushion made, we’ll give you the exact size of the seat. Wait until the paint has cured before putting the cushion on, so the fabric doesn’t stick or mark the finish.
Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, fill in our short enquiry form and describe what’s happening.
What window seats can’t fix
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Work on the window frame or glass
- Any wiring, which needs an electrician
- Plumbing work on the radiator under the window

Questions we are often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Farnborough?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do you cover homes near Orpington station?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?
The answer depends on what goes under the seat. A lid gives access to the whole space, good for blankets and occasional things, while drawers mean you do not have to move the cushion.
What is a window seat made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
When is bespoke worth it?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
What affects the cost of window seats
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The width and height of the space
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
When you contact us, these help most:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.
