Built-in Bookshelves in Farnborough

Thinking about built-in bookshelves in Farnborough? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • A home library or study
  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It’s how a straight bookcase meets a wall that is not straight.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges, which suits shelving with lots of edges. You choose the colour at the design stage.

About our built-in bookshelves in Farnborough

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details, whichever suits the room. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. If you are living with empty alcoves that could hold books and a home library or study, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Farnborough, so that layout is worth knowing well. Built-in bookshelves typically go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Farnborough?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Farnborough?

Yes. Farnborough is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

Whether a shelf sags depends on how long it is and what it carries. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, adding a lip or support on longer runs. Overloading any shelf will still make it bend, so spread heavy books out.

What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?

It is possible with some thought. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

We check how the wall is built at the design visit. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries.
  5. Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Living-room carpentry in Farnborough: local notes

In the area around Farnborough, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Farnborough include Church of St Giles the Abbot (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Elm House (Grade II), under half a mile west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live in a flat close to Orpington station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For families living near Farnborough Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near South Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Parking near your home
  • How big the furniture is
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Approximate measurements of the space

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
