Window seats in Green Street Green

About our window seats in Green Street Green

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. Drawers or a lift-up lid turn it into storage as well as seating. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. Whatever the room, the process for a home in Green Street Green is the same. If your home has wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste, that is what window seats are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A good part of the housing around Green Street Green is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Your questions about window seats in Green Street Green

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is Green Street Green in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. Green Street Green is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

Often a mix works best. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We will suggest a layout at the design visit.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the design visit.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Fitted storage in Green Street Green

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Green Street Green were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 45%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Green Street Green include Chelsfield Hall Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Denbarn Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Green Street Green joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

The wider area includes historic houses like Down House, about 2.1 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. For a family home near Green Street Green Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Next to a cold window, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a good choice. It takes a spray-painted or hand-painted finish well, and holds its shape in the bay.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panels can suit the shutters or doors in an older room. The lines are kept neat and even.

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Let us know about the radiator before we visit
  • Consider adding shelving around the seat
  • Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Condensation can form on windows in cold weather, so wipe the cill and the back of the seat if it gets wet. A little ventilation helps keep things dry. If anything isn’t right with the seat, get in touch through our contact form and we will talk it through.

Open and close lids with care, rather than letting them drop. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly.

What it costs

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

To get a quote for window seats in Green Street Green, send us a few details through our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, plus any rough measurements. We will arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf benches are made for straight walls and square corners, and bay windows rarely offer either. In a bay, a standard bench leaves tricky gaps. A bespoke seat follows the shape of the bay. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is a seat that fits the space. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

How fitting works for window seats

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

How to get a quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
