Fitted storage in Wandsworth
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Wandsworth were built before 1919 (about 49%) and since 2000 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 39 entries within half a mile of the centre of Wandsworth. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Anne, less than half a mile east of the centre of Wandsworth, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near St Anne's Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. For families living near St Anne's CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
Wandsworth is part of the London Borough of Wandsworth, about 1 mile north-east of Clapham Junction. We design and make window seats for homes in Wandsworth. We cover places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
Every home in SW18, SW15 and SW11 is within our area for window seats, from the main roads to the quieter streets. You’ll find streets here such as Alma Road, Marl Road and Knoll Road, and we cover homes on all of them for window seats. If you’re just outside Wandsworth, we also cover Southfields (1 mile south), Earlsfield (1 mile south), Hurlingham (1 mile north), Clapham Junction (1 mile north-east) and Battersea (1 mile north-east). Across the rest of the rest of London, our area takes in Tooting (2 miles south-east), Tooting Bec (2 miles south-east), Balham (2 miles south-east), Furzedown (3 miles south-east), Streatham Park (3 miles south-east) and Roehampton (2 miles west).

Well-known places in the area include Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (1 mile west) and Southside Wandsworth (close by, under half a mile west).
About our window seats in Wandsworth
Each window seat is made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Wandsworth and fitted. If your home has no comfortable place to sit in the light and standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. That matters around Wandsworth, where a large share of the homes are that old. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Tips worth knowing
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
- Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
- Think about what you will store under the seat
- Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the seat clean. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge of the seat is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.
Avoid standing on the seat to reach the window or curtains. Standing on it can mark the paint and strain the lid. A little care keeps it looking good.
FAQs: window seats in Wandsworth
Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Wandsworth?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you make window seats for homes in Wandsworth?
Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?
Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.
How is a window seat priced?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
What materials do you use for window seats?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.
How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

Getting ready for fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
What affects the price in Wandsworth
There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The overall size of the piece
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.
