Questions we are often asked
My house in Southfields is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do you make window seats for homes in Southfields?
Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Southfields included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
Will a window seat work below a sash window?
Yes. We set the seat below the cill, so the sash still works. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the measuring visit.
Window seats in Southfields: what you get
Bay windows are common in period homes, and they make a natural place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that are not quite straight. We measure every face and scribe the seat to follow them, so the seat follows the bay exactly. It’s the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. If you’re living with wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and toys spread across a bedroom floor, that’s what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Southfields, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the window seat we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Making use of tricky spaces in Southfields
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Southfields were built before 1919 (about 57%) and since 2000 (about 14%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 6 entries within half a mile of the centre of Southfields. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. All of London, Wandsworth included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Southfields fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Fulham Palace, about 1.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. For families living near Floreat Wandsworth Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Living in a block of flats near Earlsfield station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What affects the cost of window seats
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How square the room is
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
Before the design visit
These details help when you get in touch:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the measuring visit.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
- We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
- Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
- In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
- The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
How to get a quote
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
Boards, parts and paint
Pull-out drawers
Drawers under a window seat are easy to reach, even with a cushion on top. They suit toys, books and things you use often. We size the drawers to suit the seat.
Lift-up lids
A lid can run the full width of the seat or be split into sections. Smaller lids are easier to open. The design visit is where we agree the layout.
Why bespoke in Southfields?
A standalone bench can be moved, which is useful if you rent or plan to move soon. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece can’t. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Tips worth knowing
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Make room so the whole bay can be measured
- Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
- Make sure any shutters still open fully
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a note of the colour for later. Spray-painted surfaces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.
Use a step rather than standing on the seat. Standing on it can mark the paint and strain the lid. A little care keeps it looking good.
