Fitted wardrobes for your home in Furzedown

About our fitted wardrobes in Furzedown

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. For a bedroom in Furzedown, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are mismatched bedroom furniture and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Furzedown built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bedrooms in Furzedown: local notes

About 65% of the homes in the area around Furzedown went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Furzedown include Furzedown House (Grade II), less than half a mile west, and Penwortham School (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Terraced houses are more common around Furzedown than across Wandsworth: about 39% of households, against about 22%, the 2021 Census shows. Narrow halls and stairs in terraces mean the furniture comes in sections.

If you live near Figge's Marsh, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For a family home near Graveney School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Plinths and scribe strips

Most fitted wardrobes in older homes need scribing at the sides and top. It’s what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Furzedown

Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or will not go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

If you live in a flat close to Tooting station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

I live near Tooting station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Wandsworth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

My home in Furzedown is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

We plan the sections around the route into your flat, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

The space in front of the wardrobe normally decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
