Window seats for your home in Grange Park

Window seats in Grange Park: what you get

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. Drawers or a lift-up lid turn it into storage as well as seating. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. In Grange Park, the design visit is where the details are settled. Typical reasons to get in touch are unused space below a sash window and a radiator that makes the space hard to use; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Grange Park, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

FAQs: window seats in Grange Park

Do you make window seats for homes in Grange Park?

Yes, Grange Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Grange Park?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will a window seat work below a sash window?

Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. Repairs to the window itself aren’t our work.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?

Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. A grille in the front lets the heat into the room. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Why people ask for window seats in Grange Park

Some people plan a window seat as part of updating a room. Mention any decorating plans at the design visit so the timing works. We make and fit the seat, and your decorator handles the walls.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use

Forty Hall, about 2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

Where other trades come in

Not everything around window seats is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Making the seat cushion, which is not our work

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Window seats in Grange Park: local notes

About 34% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Grange Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 27% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Grange Park. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Grange Park, let us know during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a flat near Grange Park station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near Church of St Mary Magdalene, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch and describe the window.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It’s used for the fronts, side panels and radiator grilles. A moisture-resistant grade suits a spot where windows can gather condensation.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the seat a very even surface. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.
