Window seats in Haggerston: what you get

Each window seat is made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits a seat that takes weight every day, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Haggerston and fitted. We make window seats from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and wanting a seat without blocking the radiator.

Many homes around Haggerston have been built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Fitted storage can turn a hallway recess, a landing or the space under the stairs into somewhere useful. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Is it time for window seats?

Many people want a window seat for the storage beneath it. A seat with a lift-up lid or drawers can hold toys, blankets, books or games. It adds storage without taking up more of the floor.

Here’s what window seats can help with:

  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use
  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Columba, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

What to check before you book

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Pricing window seats in Haggerston

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Before the design visit

These details help when you get in touch:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

For a quote for window seats in Haggerston, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

What window seats can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Seat cushions, which you source separately
  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.

FAQs: window seats in Haggerston

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Haggerston?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live in a flat in Haggerston. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Window seats are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a window seat work below a sash window?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. These details are measured when we visit.

Can you build a window seat over a radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat isn’t trapped. Space is left around the radiator too. If you want the radiator moved, that’s work for your plumber.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

What is a window seat made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it’s useful to let us know during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us with some details about the bay or recess.
  2. We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and discuss the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Ask for a quote

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
