Window seats for your home in Homerton

Window seats in Homerton

Each window seat is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits a seat that takes weight every day, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Homerton and fitted. Typical reasons to get in touch are a bay with no furniture that fits and a radiator that makes the space hard to use, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

One flat can have concrete, block and plasterboard walls side by side. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Homerton, each wall is checked before fixings are chosen. Storage on a lightweight wall stands on the floor and is fixed back for stability.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the window seat we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

How fitting works for window seats

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design, the storage and the finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
  4. We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

What affects the cost of window seats

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Getting in touch

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Fitted storage in Homerton

About 37% of the homes in the streets around Homerton went up before 1919, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. The Clapton Square Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Homerton. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. A van working in Homerton will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 0.3 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. If you live near Millfields Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. For a family home near Rushmore Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Homerton is about 2 miles south-west of Shoreditch, in the London Borough of Hackney. Homes in Homerton are part of the area we cover for window seats, as part of our work in every London borough. Homerton is one of 20 places on our list for Hackney.

Every address in E5, E9 and E8 is within our area for window seats. Other parts of Hackney we cover include Shoreditch (2 miles south-west), Hoxton (2 miles south-west), De Beauvoir Town (2 miles west), Stoke Newington (2 miles north-west), Haggerston (2 miles south-west) and Stamford Hill (2 miles north-west). Common questions about window seats

My home in Homerton is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Window seats are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Homerton?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can you build a window seat over a radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that is work for your plumber.

What is a window seat made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Why bespoke in Homerton?

Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A bench simply sits in front of the window. In an older room, the difference shows. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, so off-the-shelf widths rarely fill the gaps. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the window woodwork.

Lift-up lids

A lid that lifts is the simplest form of window seat storage. You will need to move any cushion to open it, so it suits things you reach for now and then.
