Haggerston Loft Storage

In Haggerston, we design loft storage around the room you actually have. Your eaves cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs

Loft storage in Haggerston

The space behind the knee wall usually has insulation and ventilation to think about. We design the storage so it does not block airflow or crush insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft. When we visit in Haggerston, we will see what’s there. Typical reasons to get in touch are standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and boxes and suitcases with no home; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Many homes around Haggerston date from 2000 onwards, so spaces like that are worth a second look. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Haggerston homes and loft storage

In the neighbourhood around Haggerston, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Haggerston, Historic England’s list includes St Columba's Vicarage (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west, and Church of St Columba (Grade I), under half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 31% of homes in the streets around Haggerston were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In a post-war house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes is worth using.

For families living near Randal Cremer Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.5 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Haggerston is within the London Borough of Hackney, about 1 mile south of Shoreditch. We design and make loft storage for homes in Haggerston. Our work takes in places right across Hackney.

Every address in N1, E2 and E8 is within our area for loft storage, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Whether you live on a street such as Hyde Road, Glebe Road and Ufton Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for loft storage. Haggerston sits close to the A1208. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover Hoxton (1 mile west), Shoreditch (1 mile south), De Beauvoir Town (1 mile north), Kingsland (1 mile north) and Bethnal Green (1 mile south-east). We also make loft storage in nearby places like Homerton (2 miles north-east), West Hackney (2 miles north), Lower Clapton (2 miles north-east), Stoke Newington (2 miles north), Clapton (2 miles north-east) and Stamford Hill (2 miles north).

Boards, parts and paint

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the back of the eaves within reach. We size each drawer for what you plan to keep in it. They suit clothes, bedding and boxes.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.

What prompts loft storage in Haggerston

A boarded loft can be made far more useful with shelving. Shelves and cupboards keep things off the floor and easy to find. It is ideal for things you need now and then.

Here’s what loft storage can help with:

  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs

If you live near Haggerston Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

How to choose a carpenter in London

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Common questions about loft storage

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Haggerston?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Haggerston?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

How is loft storage priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. It starts with some details from you.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
