How we make window seats for West Barnes
We make the seat itself, and you can source a cushion to the size we give you. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We plan the depth and height so the seat is comfortable with a cushion on it. Most enquiries start with off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window and wanting a quiet place to read, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around West Barnes, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the window seat we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

When is bespoke worth it?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- It starts when you get in touch about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
- At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
- Your window seat is made at our workshop, shaped to the window.
- The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Pricing window seats in West Barnes
To work out the quote, we look at:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- How big the furniture is
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What we need to know
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Approximate measurements of the space
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Your postcode and the borough
To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Looking after your furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
- Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
- Think about what you’ll store under the seat
- Consider adding shelving around the seat
In winter, windows can run with condensation, so keep the area behind the seat dry. Opening the window for a while helps. Should you have a question about the seat, fill in our short enquiry form and we will help.
Do not block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.
Your questions about window seats in West Barnes
I live near Motspur Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do you make window seats for homes in West Barnes?
Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London, and West Barnes is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?
Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. Repairs to the window itself aren’t our work.
What is a window seat made from?
The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
