Common questions about window seats

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Raynes Park station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bushey Mead?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Which materials go into your window seats?

Our window seats are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Window seats in Bushey Mead

In many period houses, a bay window is the obvious place for a seat. Bays have angled sides, and their walls are seldom square or flat. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It’s the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. People usually come to us about off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window and needing more storage in the room, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Bushey Mead, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Window seats are measured and made for the house you have.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

What prompts window seats in Bushey Mead

A radiator under the window often makes the space hard to use. A built-in seat with a grille lets the heat out while making the space useful. It’s a neat answer to a common problem.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay
  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • A bay with no furniture that fits

Southside House, about 0.7 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Fixing the window itself
  • Painting the walls of the bay

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits panels, grilles and plain fronts alike. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

Lift-up lids

A lid that lifts is the simplest form of window seat storage. Any cushion has to come off before the lid can lift, so it’s best for occasional storage.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
