How we make window seats for Rise Park
A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. When we visit in Rise Park, we’ll check the radiator and plan around it. Most enquiries start with an empty bay that doesn’t get used and needing more storage in the room; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A good part of the housing around Rise Park is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Storage in Rise Park homes: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 50% of the housing in the streets around Rise Park, with about 44% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Havering is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Rise Park is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Rise Park (about 44%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Windows in homes of that era are often wide, with a radiator underneath, so a window seat needs a grille or open front to keep the heat moving.
If your children go to Rise Park Infant School or a school nearby, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Close to Raphael Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. For a flat near Gidea Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Rise Park is about 1 mile south of Romford, within the London Borough of Havering. Design visits and fitting in Rise Park can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. We list Rise Park among 22 places we cover in Havering.

Why bespoke in Rise Park?
Off-the-shelf benches are made for straight walls and square corners, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. A bench in a bay leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space at the corners. A seat made for the window follows every angle. It costs more than a bench, and what you get is a seat that belongs to the room. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before and after fitting day
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Make room so the whole bay can be measured
- Consider how often you’ll reach for what’s stored
- Tell us about the radiator before we visit
- Note whether your window has working shutters
In winter, windows can run with condensation, so keep the area behind the seat dry. Opening the window for a while helps. Should you have a question about the seat, drop us a line using the contact form and we will help.
Wipe away condensation from the window before it runs onto the seat. A little fresh air helps reduce condensation. Do not leave water sitting on the painted surface.
What happens on fitting day
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat.
- At the design visit we measure the bay or recess and check the radiator, cill and any shutters. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to look over.
- The seat is made in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.
Before we arrive
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
How to get a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Questions from Rise Park
Is parking a problem for fitting in Rise Park?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Is Rise Park in the area you cover for window seats?
Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London, and Rise Park is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?
Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the design visit.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, message us from the contact page.
