Window seats for homes in World's End

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around World's End were built before 1919 (about 59%) and since 2000 (about 17%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of World's End, 22 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Purpose-built flats are home to about 57% of households in the streets around World's End, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Carlyle's House, about 0.5 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square. Living in a block of flats near Imperial Wharf station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near St John's Church Centre, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

World's End is about 2 miles north-west of Kensington, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. From period terraces to newer flats in World's End, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our Kensington and Chelsea coverage includes World's End.

Every address in SW10, SW6 and SW3 is within our area for window seats, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Streets in the area include Ann Lane, Lots Road and Avalon Road, and we cover homes on all of them for window seats. We also cover the places around World's End: Little Chelsea (1 mile north), Chelsea Harbour (1 mile south), Walham Green (1 mile south-west), Sands End (1 mile south) and South Kensington (1 mile north). Elsewhere in Kensington and Chelsea, we also cover Kensington (2 miles north-west), Notting Hill (2 miles north-west), Notting Dale (3 miles north-west), Holland Park (2 miles north-west), Bayswater (2 miles north) and Kensal Town (3 miles north-west).

Around World's End

We fit furniture in homes around Chelsea Academy, The World's End pub and English National Ballet School and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is Imperial Wharf station, about 0.5 miles south. Nearby you’ll also find Kensington Arcade (1.4 miles north) and Chelsea Stadium Tour And Museum (close by, under half a mile west). Not far away are Battersea Park Lake.

Window seats in World's End

Some window seats are built in with shelves or cupboards around them. Bookshelves either side of a window, with a seat between, make a quiet place to read. We design the seat and the surrounding units together, so the lines and the finish match. We can talk through the options when we visit in World's End. Typical reasons to get in touch are no comfortable place to sit in the light and a recess under the window doing nothing, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around World's End were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the window woodwork.

Birch plywood

Seats take weight every day, so they need to be strong. That is why we use birch plywood for the frame and top. It suits the drawers below too.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, every side of the window is measured.
  3. We agree the seat, the storage and the finish, and send a quote in writing.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every lid and drawer with you.

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Consider adding shelving around the seat
  • Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
  • Tell us about the radiator before we visit

Before we leave, we check every lid and drawer with you. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. You’ll know it all works as it should.

Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, use our contact form and describe what’s happening.

FAQs: window seats in World's End

My house in World's End is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

I live in a flat in World's End. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Window seats are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What materials do you use for window seats?

Our window seats are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The internal fittings
  • How many doors and drawers there are

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
