Window seats designed for your room

How we make window seats for Notting Hill

Cushions aren’t something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a sash window with space beneath it going to waste and no space for toys and games.

A large share of the homes around Notting Hill were built before 1919, and older houses have lots of odd corners: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. That is where fitted storage comes in.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Looking after your furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
  • Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
  • Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece

Before we leave, we check every lid and drawer with you. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. That way, everything works as planned.

Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. A clear grille keeps the room warm and the seat at an even temperature. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.

Do you need window seats in Notting Hill?

The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. Bays are hard to furnish, and a built-in seat makes good use of them. It gives you a place to sit in the light.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • Needing more storage in the room

If you live near Holland Park, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What happens on fitting day

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the window.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
  4. Your window seat is built in our workshop, shaped to the window.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Starting with a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Questions from Notting Hill

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Notting Hill?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

My home in Notting Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What materials do you use for window seats?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

How we price window seats

What you pay depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Storage in Notting Hill homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 69% of the housing in the streets around Notting Hill, with about 11% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 294 entries within half a mile of the centre of Notting Hill. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and window seats can be designed to work around them. About 31% of households in the area around Notting Hill live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

If your children go to St Clement and St James CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live in a period home close to St John's Notting Hill, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.
