- Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
- A radiator that makes the space hard to use

Looking after your furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Consider how often you will reach for what’s stored
- Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
- Note whether your window has working shutters
- Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Spray-painted surfaces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.
Use a step rather than standing on the seat. The seat is made for sitting, and standing puts weight in one spot. A little care keeps it looking good.
Window seats in Oval
The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers mean you do not have to move a cushion to reach things. We’ll talk through which suits the way you use the room. If you are living with a radiator that makes the space hard to use and a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay, window seats made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Walls in a block of flats can be concrete, brick, block or plasterboard, sometimes all in one flat. Since most households around Oval live in purpose-built flats, we check each wall at the design visit before choosing fixings. On a stud wall, heavier pieces stand on the floor and are tied back.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the frame, the seat top and the drawers, with the edge either shown or painted.
Pull-out drawers
A seat can have drawers along its whole length, or drawers with a lid section. Where there is a radiator, the drawers are planned around it. The design visit settles the mix.

What else we make in Oval
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Ready-made benches are made in fixed widths and depths. Bespoke seats are made to the size of the space, so nothing is wasted, and the storage below can be drawers, a lid or both. Big standalone units do not always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. It is then put together in the room.
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

FAQs: window seats in Oval
I live near Vauxhall station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.
My home in Oval is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?
Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. We do not repair sashes or cills.
From workshop to your room
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so it’s worth checking with the managing agent ahead of time. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.
- You get in touch and describe the window.
- At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
How to prepare
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Advice
Storage in Oval homes: local notes
About 32% of the homes in the area around Oval went up since 2000, and about 26% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Oval is in the Vauxhall Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Oval is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
Buckingham Palace, about 1.7 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. If you live near Vauxhall Park, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a period home close to Calvary Church of God in Christ, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
