Stockwell Window Seats

For homes in Stockwell, we make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.

  • A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay
  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it

Window seats designed for your room

Window seats for homes in Stockwell

Many windows have a radiator beneath them. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. When we visit in Stockwell, we will check the radiator and plan around it. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a radiator under the window getting in the way and a period room that needs furniture to suit it.

Most homes around Stockwell are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
  • Consider how often you will reach for what’s stored
  • Make room so the whole bay can be measured
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often wipe off with a damp cloth.

Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. A clear grille keeps the room warm and the seat at an even temperature. Storage over a radiator stays warm, so it’s best for things that do not mind it.

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Plastering and decorating around the seat
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Radiator grilles

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: window seats are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.

  1. First you let us know about the bay or window where you’d like a seat.
  2. At the design visit we measure the bay or recess and check the radiator, cill and any shutters. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the seat we have discussed.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and the floor.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Fitted storage in Stockwell

Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Stockwell, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The Stockwell Green Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Stockwell. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 21% of households in the area around Stockwell, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If your children go to St Andrew's Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Near listed buildings like Stockwell Green United Reformed Church, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Stockwell, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Brixton station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Questions we are often asked

Is Stockwell in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes, we work across Lambeth, Stockwell included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Stockwell affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will a window seat work below a sash window?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. These details are measured when we visit.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

The answer depends on what goes under the seat. A lift-up lid opens the full depth, which suits bulky things you do not need every day, while drawers are easier with a cushion on top.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on grilles as well as flat fronts. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

Doors and drawer fronts

A radiator grille sits in the front of the seat, letting the heat reach the room. It’s finished like the rest of the seat. The rest of the front can be drawers, doors or plain panels.
