Window Seats in St George's Fields

Thinking about window seats in St George's Fields? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.

  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay
  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it

Window seats designed for your room

How we make window seats for St George's Fields

The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers mean you don’t have to move a cushion to reach things. We’ll talk through which suits the way you use the room. If you’re living with an empty bay that doesn’t get used and a child’s room that needs storage and seating, that’s what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Many homes around St George's Fields date from 2000 onwards, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in St George's Fields is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

I live near Elephant & Castle station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can a window seat go over the radiator?

Yes. The seat has a grille or open front, so the warmth can reach the room. We also leave space around the radiator. Moving the radiator is for your plumber, if you’d prefer it elsewhere.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. Repairs to the window itself are not our work.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

How fitting works for window seats

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it helps to sort them out in advance. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You let us know about the window and the room, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
  2. At the design visit, every side of the window is measured.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. The seat is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What affects the price in St George's Fields

The price for your room depends on:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, use our contact form.

What to send when you get in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from window seats starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Tell us about the radiator before we visit
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit

We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. If there is a radiator grille, we make sure the radiator is clear and the grille is in place. You’ll know it all works as it should.

Every so often, look at the hinges and any handles. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, get in touch through our contact form and tell us.

Making use of tricky spaces in St George's Fields

Homes built since 2000 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around St George's Fields, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 164 entries within half a mile of the centre of St George's Fields. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 81% of households in the neighbourhood around St George's Fields, according to Census 2021. For a flat, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Near listed buildings like Old Vic Theatre, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of St George's Fields, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to St George's Cathedral Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a period home close to Former Church of St Jude, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The seat and its frame are made from it, as they carry weight daily. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panels can suit the shutters or doors in an older room. The lines are kept neat and even.
