What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.
- First, you let us know about the space and what you need to store. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
- We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
- You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
- We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop.
- We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Starting with a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
Fitted cupboards in Vauxhall
A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, alongside spaces for the washing machine and dryer you choose. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, so we plan the cupboards around their work. People usually come to us about a linen cupboard on the landing and cupboards for a utility or boot room, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Newer homes tend to have finished floors that scratch easily, so we cover them while we work. Around Vauxhall, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

What it costs
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Parking near your home
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
What we need to know
Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Flat-pack cupboards can be put together quickly by a confident DIYer, and that is a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it is built around your space. Large standalone pieces do not always fit the lift or the hallway, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Questions we are often asked
Is Vauxhall in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?
Yes. Vauxhall is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Vauxhall?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the space. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?
Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.
Honest limits
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Connecting appliances to water or waste
- Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Moving gas or electricity meters
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it is made from
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Ventilated doors
- Hand-painted finish
- Adjustable shelves
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
If you’d like the cupboards painted to match a wall or the woodwork, hand painting on site works well and makes later touch-ups easy.
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim the edge of each cupboard to follow the wall, closing any gaps.
Vauxhall homes and fitted cupboards
In the neighbourhood around Vauxhall, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 36%) and before 1919 (about 21%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The centre of Vauxhall is within about a quarter of a mile of the Vauxhall Gardens Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 78% of households in the streets around Vauxhall live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. For a family home near Vauxhall Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Living in a block of flats near Vauxhall station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
