How we make fitted wardrobes for Vauxhall
Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about too little room for clothes and damp or musty clothes against an external wall.
A large share of the homes around Vauxhall date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely have enough built-in storage for a bedroom. Fitted wardrobes can be designed around the window, the radiator and the door swing, so the room still works. In a managed block, the lift and delivery rules are worth checking before fitting day.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it helps to let us know during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and let us know about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.
How to prepare
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Empty the space we’ll be working in

Advice
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Vauxhall
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Vauxhall?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Vauxhall?
Yes, we work across Lambeth, Vauxhall included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

Fitted wardrobes in Vauxhall: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Vauxhall were built since 2000 (about 36%) and before 1919 (about 21%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Vauxhall Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Vauxhall. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 78% of households in the streets around Vauxhall, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Woodstock Court, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a family home near Vauxhall Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

When is bespoke worth it?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Tips worth knowing
People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
- Tell us which walls face outside
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes.
Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting, for plain or panelled doors alike.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits wardrobes in a period room. You choose the colour, and touch-ups are simple.
What it costs
The price for your room depends on:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
What we need to know
When you contact us, these help most:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
