Wall beds for your home in Clapham

How we make wall beds for Clapham

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day for a desk, a hobby or just space. When guests come, the bed folds down. If you are living with a hobby room with a bed for guests and a home office that also sleeps guests, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A large share of the homes around Clapham were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. First, you let us know about the space.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Wall beds for homes in Clapham

Homes built before 1919 make up about 45% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Clapham, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 16 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Clapham. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the area around Clapham, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

For a flat near Clapham High Street station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses such as Carlyle's House, about 1.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Clapham is about 1 mile east of Stockwell, within the London Borough of Lambeth. We design and make wall beds for homes in Clapham and across Lambeth. Our work takes in places right across Lambeth.

Every home in SW4, SW8 and SW9 is covered for wall beds. Whether you live on a street like Grafton Square, Clapham High Street and Houghton Square or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for wall beds. The B224 and B303 run close to Clapham; on busy main roads, unloading wall beds takes a little planning. Nearby, we also make wall beds in Stockwell (1 mile east), Little Portugal (1 mile north-east), Clapham Park (1 mile south), South Lambeth (1 mile north-east) and Brixton (1 mile south-east). Other parts of Lambeth we cover include Streatham (3 miles south), West Norwood (3 miles south-east), South Bank (3 miles north), Loughborough Junction (2 miles east), Waterloo (3 miles north-east) and Vauxhall (2 miles north-east).

FAQs: wall beds in Clapham

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

My home in Clapham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

Are fold-down beds safe to use?

Wall beds are made for regular use as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What affects the price in Clapham

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Helping us understand the room

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

We can hand paint the cabinet in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up later.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, so it suits the doors on the bed cabinet.

Flats, leases and landlords

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
