Fitted cupboards for your home in Clapham
Is it time for fitted cupboards?
A new utility room or boot room often prompts the call. Washing machines, dryers, coats, boots and cleaning things all need a place, and a run of fitted cupboards can hold them neatly.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
- Storage for towels and bedding
- Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
- A neat cupboard around the boiler
The wider area includes historic houses such as Carlyle's House, about 1.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.
Before you hire any carpenter

About our fitted cupboards in Clapham
Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors often slope. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. If your home has a utility room with proper storage and storage for coats and shoes in the hallway, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
With a large share of homes around Clapham built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions we are often asked
My house in Clapham is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?
Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels for that.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing is how a cupboard meets a wall that isn’t flat, closing any gaps.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
What we don’t do
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
- Making good walls after other work
- Relocating meters or the fuse board
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from

Storage in Clapham homes: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 45% of the housing in the streets around Clapham, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 129 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Clapham. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 54% of households in the neighbourhood around Clapham live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
For families living near Clapham Manor Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

How fitting day works
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
- We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
- A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- Everything is built in our workshop.
- We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is awkward, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is usually the better answer. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
