  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish
  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste

Window seats for your home in Hatton

Window seats for homes in Hatton

A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, usually with storage below, under a lift-up lid or in drawers. In Hatton, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People typically come to us about a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat and nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Hatton, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

A ready-made bench is built for a flat wall and a square corner, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. A bench in a bay leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space at the corners. A bespoke seat follows the shape of the bay. It’s a bigger investment, and the gain is a seat that fits the space. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Consider how often you will reach for what’s stored
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

When we have finished fitting, the seat and its storage are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.

Condensation on the glass can drip onto the cill and the seat, so wipe it away. A little fresh air helps reduce condensation. Dry any water on the paint promptly.

The problems window seats solve

The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. A bay can be an awkward space for furniture, and a seat makes it part of the room. It becomes a place to sit, read or look out.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A recess under the window doing nothing
  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way

If you live near Hounslow Heath, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

How fitting works for window seats

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the bay or recess.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

How to get a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Window seats in Hatton: local notes

About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hatton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 31% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Hatton, Historic England’s list includes Green Man Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in Hatton is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For an older house near The Parish Church of the Good Shepherd, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. If your children go to Cranford Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

In TW14, TW6 and TW4, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. The A30 runs close to Hatton; on busy main roads, unloading window seats takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for window seats include Cranford (1 mile north-east), Harlington (1 mile north-west), Bedfont (1 mile south-west) and Feltham (1 mile south). We also make window seats in nearby places like Ruislip (8 miles north), Hayes (3 miles north), Hillingdon (5 miles north), Yeading (5 miles north), Yiewsley (5 miles north) and West Drayton (3 miles north-west).

Questions from Hatton

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hatton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make window seats for a home in Hatton?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London, and Hatton is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. We do not repair sashes or cills.

How much does a window seat cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. It depends on the size and shape of the window, the storage you want and the finish. To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and we will arrange a design visit.
