Alcove units in South Acton

Alcove units in South Acton: what you get

Many people choose cupboards at low level and shelves above them. Closed cupboards hide everyday clutter, and the shelves are for books and favourite objects. The top of the cupboard makes a useful surface at a comfortable height. We set the heights to suit the room and what you’ll store. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are somewhere to keep books and records and standard units leaving gaps at the sides.

Some living rooms in London have tall ceilings and cornices, while others have low, plain ceilings. However your room in South Acton is built, the height is measured as carefully as the width, since it sets how tall alcove units can be. Sections are sized for the stairs and doors on the way in.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for a smooth and even finish. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic one.

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we typically scribe the sides and often the top too. It is the difference between a unit that sits in the alcove and one that belongs there.

How fitting works for alcove units

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Questions from South Acton

Does a conservation area in or near South Acton affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is South Acton in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London, and South Acton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. Few alcoves in older houses are truly square, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

It’s up to you. Full-height units give the most storage, while others stop them at the picture rail or leave open shelves above a low cupboard. We’ll go through what suits your room when we visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

South Acton homes and alcove units

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around South Acton were built before 1919 (about 41%) and since 2000 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of South Acton, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. About 26% of homes in the neighbourhood around South Acton were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes normally have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so alcove units are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

The wider area includes historic houses like Gunnersbury Park, about 0.3 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Gunnersbury House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

The problems alcove units solve

In bedrooms, the alcoves may be the only place for hanging space. A fitted alcove cupboard holds clothes without filling the floor.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Room to work in an alcove
  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture

If your children go to Ark Acton Academy or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

What affects the price in South Acton

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Let us know about stairs, parking and access early
  • Make the alcoves easy to reach for measuring
  • Sort out damp patches before fitting
  • Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold

Keep any chimney vent clear once the units are in, even when the cupboards fill up. Ventilation helps keep the chimney breast dry.

Every so often, check that hinges and handles haven’t worked loose, and adjust any door that starts to catch.
